Fine     FIRST AIRMAIL OF THE WORLD: Small letter dated 22/SE/1870 sent from PARIS by the first BALLOON MONTÉ during the seige of the city by the Prussian army. Franked with 20c. stamp and numeral cancel (dotted star) datestamped "PARIS - MINISTERE DES FINANCES - 2F./23-SEP-70", to Lisieux (with arrival backstamp of 19/OC) and from there forwarded to Dinan (arrival 22/OC), very rare. With a small cut at top right, else very fine, excellent appearance, a great example of human ingenuity to maintain communications! Scott catalog value US$11,500+
