240 ARGENTINA - POSTAL HISTORY
Auction #1923: ARGENTINA: Selection of good lots, rarities and "special material"

VF.     14/FE/1861 BUENOS AIRES - MASNOU (Spain): Entire letter dispatched from the FRENCH POSTAL AGENCY in Buenos Aires with postage partially paid (stamp of 80c. Napoleon imperforate) with "anchor" cancel in blue, rectangular "P.P." in black, and green-blue octagonal datestamp "CONFEDERATION ARGENTINE". It was carried by steamer SAINTONGE to Rio de Janeiro and from there to Bordeaux by steamer BEARN. On reverse it bears several transit marks: Bordeaux, Perpignan, La Junquera and Barcelona, and on front "4 Rs." postage dues that had to be paid by the addressee. The rates of the Consular Agency were the same as those applied by postal agents on board the steamer: in 1861 80c. to Spain (partial) for letters of up to 7.5 grams. Rare cover, very interesting, very fine quality!
