33 ARGENTINE ANTARCTICA - POSTAL HISTORY

F.VF     SHIP WRECK: FDC cover commemorating the first Antarctic mail (25/MAY/1947), re-franked and sent from Melchior Antarictic base to La Plata on 8/FE/1951, with evident signs of effect of water damage, with a letter of the Argentine Post indicating that this piece was carried by the SHIPPING BOAT TORNQUIST that SUNK near the South Orkneys, and the mail sacks were rescued by the Argentine fishing boat "Arpón" that took them to the Falkland Islands, from there the mail was taken to destination by the English steamship "JOHN BISCOE". We also include a cover sent on the same day from Melchior to Buenos Aires, with arrival mark on back of 27/AP/1951, very attractive lot!
