Auction #1907: WORLDWIDE + ARGENTINA: First general auction of the year!
Cover / Cat.#:
VF. Long entire letter dated PELOTAS 16/FE/1865, sent to Buenos Aires by "Paquete Mercy", on reverse it received a datestamp of the English Postal Agency in Rio de Janeiro for 8/MAR, on front it bears a circular "PAID AT RIO DE JANEIRO" mark with crown, both in gray-blue, also manuscript postage dues in colored pencils. The content describes the difficult situation caused by the war, as Pelotas was the place with the most notable effects "[translated from Spanish] because it is where the presidency of the province is". It also narrates the presence of a so called "corso terrestre" or "guerilla" in Yaguaron and the fear of a revolt of the black people encouraged by "Oriental" (Uruguayan) leaders. It includes an endorsed bill of exchange for 100 ounces of gold. Very fine quality and absolutely interesting, letters sent to Buenos Aires with this English marking are extremely rare!
